Palmer, Ridgeway — During today’s senate session, Senator Timbowalk had motioned to blanket-pass all of the bills on the docket, meaning that they don’t have to pass them one-by-one. One of the bills that was included in the lump was S6-11, the Voice Chat Oversight Act. If signed by the Governor, will allow Departments to enforce any policy violations that occurred in voice chat, as well as use in civil, criminal, and administrative court cases.

Until now, in-game voice chat has largely existed as a lawless haven where many of the communications said by law enforcement and elected officials could avoid legal scrutiny. Senator Japan_2s had introduced the bill to cover-up this legal chasm so that law enforcement and citizens alike can start being held accountable. However, upon the passing of the bill, audible groans of disappointment were heard from the gallery. Critics of the bill argue of concerns over infringements on free expression as well as challenges of authenticating evidence. The main critic, governor candidate RyanJSyndicate, told R-SPAN;

Its another example of unnecessary legislation produced by the Senate. They want to take away your right to free speech! Outrageous! The fact that we are letting them get away with this is astonishing.

Members of the senate would disagree with this viewpoint, with Senator Natedog9982 telling R-SPAN: “I view voice chat the same as text chat. It is a second form of communication in the game along with text.” Senator Timbowalk shared a similar view point, saying “… a lot of people mean what they say in VC; And VC and chat should be held to the same gravity.”
