Do you enjoy your civil rights? In a controversial move that has ignited fierce and clear unpopularity across Mayflower, Senator ALPHASIERRA21 wanted to remove civil rights yesterday by proposing “S.B. 30 State of Emergency and Martial Law Amendment” which essentially removed the civil rights of the Citizens of Mayflower and gave the Governor the power to suspend Statutes, codes or orders per will during Martial Law.

Why is this a bad thing? We as citizens should be protected from discrimination, unfair treatment and police brutality no matter what and this Act takes away the very thing that we Mayflowerians can rely on. Police have a lot of power and without our civil rights, the Police can do what they want to us without facing consequences. This includes false imprisonment, unlawful searches and more. This bill jeopardises the very essence of democracy, as it concentrates an alarming amount of power in the hands of the executive branch, potentially paving the way for abuse and unchecked authority. The removal of civil rights under these circumstances raises grave concerns about the erosion of individual freedoms, leaving citizens vulnerable to arbitrary decisions and actions. 

What is “Habeus Corpus” you may ask and why does Senator ALPHASIERRA21 want to grant the Governor the power to suspend such a vital legal principle in our State?

“Habeus Corpus” is a Latin term which translates to “you shall have the body” It refers to a legal principle that protects an individual’s right to personal liberty by preventing arbitrary or unlawful detention or imprisonment. This legal recourse ensures that the government or any other authority has a lawful basis for holding an individual in custody. The writ of habeas corpus is considered a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of the rule of law. It serves as a check on government power, preventing authorities from imprisoning individuals arbitrarily or without proper legal justification. Habeas corpus is often viewed as a safeguard against tyranny and a means to protect individual freedoms. The removal of Habeas Corpus, as proposed by the senator, opens the floodgates to potential abuse, empowering authorities to detain citizens without just cause or legal recourse. Now, why does Senator ALPHASIERRA21 want to remove this fundamental right away from us? We don’t know! Many Citizens of Mayflower are accusing the Mayflower First Political party of orchestrating this Act as part of a plan to give themselves more power but this is just a rumour and no one knows for sure. 

Records of this bill are gone. The Mayflower State Senate have a Trello to organise all of their bills, resolutions, and passed/failed resolutions. This is good because it allows the Citizens of Mayflower to access legislative records and acquire information. This also ensures that we are aware of what the Senate wish to introduce into law and what they have introduced. This transparency not only promotes accountability but also enables citizens to stay informed about the legislative agenda, understanding what proposals are under consideration and their current status. Now, where is S.B.30 on the Trello? Nowhere to be seen. After the Act thankfully failed, it was removed from the Trello and the bill itself was deleted. The absence of S.B. 30 from the Trello board, coupled with the deletion of the bill itself, raises alarming questions about accountability and the public’s right to information. In a democratic society, citizens must understand the rationale behind legislative decisions, especially when it involves proposals that could impact fundamental rights. We currently do not know who is accountable for this however who did it must recognise that removing legislative records is dangerous and allows the Senate to get away with things like S.B.30

Thankfully, a source we will not name has managed to record the whole act so we can see how Senator ALPHASIERRA21 wanted to remove our civil rights and also give power to the Governor to temporarily suspend the LAW. Granting the Governor the authority to suspend laws can open the door to potential abuse of power. Without proper constraints, a Governor might use this power to advance personal or political agendas, bypassing legal processes and undermining the rule of law. The rule of law is a fundamental principle that ensures everyone is subject to the law, including those in positions of authority. Allowing the Governor to suspend laws undermines this principle, creating a situation where the law becomes arbitrary and subject to the whims of those in power.

The State of Mayflower has always been a place where we can walk down the street and not be afraid to interact with the police as the fundamentals of Habeus Corpus and our civil rights have protected us from arbitrary abuse of powers. Our civil rights are vital and if a Senator wishes to remove them, it removes trust between the Citizens and the Senate.
